1970年代，很多不負責任的繁殖家把原種沙皮雜配了布魯馬士提夫犬、牛頭爹利、鬥牛犬及拳師狗等，來增長沙皮之體型和鬥性。有些更近親繁殖，至把沙皮定型為疊皮之大肉咀，是純種沙皮狗惡夢之開始。「肉嘴」沙皮因為有「壽相」，受到市場行情的熱烈追捧，為滿足市場，近親繁殖是難免之事。牠的遺傳基因之血源是有限，狗種變異，犬病及皮膚病蔓延等問題接二連三。

1980年代「肉嘴」沙皮回流大瀝原產地，大瀝的沙皮狗專業戶逐漸增多，全鎮約有5000多隻沙皮狗，其中最大的規模的是高邊陸溪村人鄧氏的沙皮狗繁殖有限公司，每年出欄量為300多隻，賣出沙皮狗最貴的為每隻10800元。在大瀝狗市場，沙皮狗的市場行情在1997年至1999年達到最高峰。特別是1997年，來自香港的商客成為了主要的沙皮狗供應對象，多數人希望買到的沙皮狗的皮越皺越好，於是，雜交沙皮狗的行情和價格遠遠好過純種沙皮。

鵲起的名聲，讓原產地大瀝一度形成幾乎家家戶戶養沙皮的「盛況」，短短十年間，過剩的沙皮又遭遇了當作肉狗廉價甩賣的厄運。

如今的大瀝，已難尋正宗原種沙皮狗的蹤跡。

慶幸的是，有原種沙皮狗愛好者偷運狗隻入香港以保留此種。
